You’ve finished all the exam testing and passed with flying colors. So, what becomes of all that paperwork and when do I finally get my callsign? Believe it or not, the “hardest” part is yet to come…
The Wait
Once the exam session is completed, the Volunteer Examiners will gather all your information, and it will be sent to the FCC for review and processing. Once the FCC has processed your information and entered it into the database, they will issue a new license. Be aware, this will not happen overnight. It could be a few days to even weeks depending on the workload they have to process at the time. But on average, most individuals receive notice within about a week.
Once the license is ready, you’ll receive an e-mail link to finish the license application and pay a license fee. Head on over to the COmmission REgistration System (CORES) website (or use the link in your -mail), log-in, and follow the instructions for making a payment. Effective April 9, 2022, the FCC began requiring a $35 application fee for new, renewal, rule waiver, and modification applications that request a new vanity call sign. You will have 10 calendar days, from the date of the application file number being issued, to pay. After the fee is paid, and the FCC has processed an application, you will receive a second email from the FCC with a link to your official license. Follow that link, print off a copy (or two) of your new license, frame it and hang it up on your shack wall.
